Wie jedes Jahr wird das imai im April mit einer Sonderschau auf der weltweit ältesten Messe für moderne und zeitgenössische Kunst vertreten sein. Der Europasaal (Messehalle 11.2) wird dafür zur Black Box.
As is the case every year imai is to be represented by a special exhibition at the world’s oldest trade fair for modern and contemporary art in April. The Europasaal (fair hall 11.2) will therefore become a Black Box.

Den Auftakt macht die Premiere 'La Plage' / 'L’Opium' als Doppelprojektion (Loop) von dem in New York ansässigen Filmemacher und Videokünstler Michel Auder. Im Anschluss an die Vernissage wird Auders Beitrag weiterhin täglich von 15 bis 17 Uhr zu sehen sein. Zusätzlich zeigt das imai an den fünf Messetagen jeweils um 13 und 18 Uhr ein thematisch ausgerichtetes Screening-Programm: DIGITAL DREAMS (Mittwoch, 22.4.), RADICAL PERFORMANCE (Donnerstag, 23.4.), ZOOM: MIKE HOOLBOOM (Freitag, 24.4.), CINE-JUNCTION (Samstag, 25.4.) und IMAI’S NEW CHOICES (Sonntag, 26.4.). Die einstündigen Streifzüge durch die Sammlung und das Vertriebsprogramm des imai bieten Kennern und Entdeckern einen abwechslungs- und spannungsreichen Zugang zu Highlights und Schätzen aus 40 Jahren Video- und Medienkunstgeschichte.

The opening is to be made with the premiere of 'La Plage' / 'L’Opium' as a double projection (loop) by the New York based film maker and video artist Michel Auder. As a follow up to the Vernissage Auder’s contribution will be shown from 3pm to 5pm daily. Additionally, over the five days of the fair, at 1pm and 6pm each day, imai is showing a thematically oriented screening programme: DIGITAL DREAMS (Wednesday, 22.4.), RADICAL PERFORMANCE (Thursday, 23.4.), ZOOM: MIKE HOOLBOOM (Friday, 24.4.), CINE-JUNCTION (Saturday, 25.4.) and IMAI’S NEW CHOICES (Sunday, 26.4.). The one hour journeys through imai’s collection and running programme offer both aficionado and novice a diverse and thrilling access to the highlights and treasures from 40 years of video and media art history.

6. März: Wiederholung des Workshops 'Der Erhalt von Videobändern' 6th March: repeat of the workshop 'The preservation of video tapes'
U-Matic, Digibeta, VHS – welche Videoformate lassen sich in Sammlungen und Archiven finden, mit welchen Problemen ist in Bezug auf ihr Handling und ihre Konservierung zu rechnen und wie können diese gelöst werden? Licht ins Dunkel der Datenträger-Frage brachte ein erster themenspezifischer Ganztagesworkshop unter der Leitung des Diplom-Restaurators Andreas Weisser am 6. Februar im imai. Aufgrund besonders großer Nachfrage ist für den 6. März eine Wiederholung der Weiterbildung angesetzt (die Teilnehmerzahl ist bereits erreicht). Für den Herbst plant das imai eine Weiterführung seines Workshop-Angebots unter Berücksichtigung weiterer medienkunstrelevanter Theorie- und Praxisfelder.

U-Matic, Digibeta, VHS – which video formats are to be found in collections and archives and what kind of problems are to be encountered in their operation and preservation and how can they be solved? To shed light on the dark of data media questions brought about the first subject specific day long workshop headed by diploma qualified restorer Andreas Weisser on the 6th February at imai. Due to the especially large demand a repeat of the advanced training is scheduled for 6th March (the maximum number of participants has already been reached). For autumn imai is planning an extension of its workshop offer with regard to further media art relevant fields in theory and practice.

17. März: Fortsetzung des Schulprojekts: 'Schüler vermitteln Videokunst'
17th March: Continuation of the school project: 'School pupils mediate video art'
Videokunst betrachten heißt für viele Jugendliche zunächst Neuland betreten, sich gewohnter Denkmuster und Wahrnehmungsschemata bewusst zu werden und diese kritisch zu hinterfragen. „Man lernt, nicht alles schwarz und weiß zu sehen, genauer hinzuschauen, auf Details zu achten. Das hat meine Augen und Ohren auf Hochtouren gebracht“, so lautet das persönliche Fazit einer Teilnehmerin des ersten im imai durchgeführten Schulprojektes (Oktober – Dezember 2008, gefördert vom Land NRW und der Stadt Düsseldorf). Für die Gruppe der 17- und 18-jährigen Schülerinnen und Schüler der Heinrich-Heine-Gesamtschule Düsseldorf war die Auseinandersetzung mit der Sammlung des imai überraschend, provozierend und herausfordernd zugleich. Die hier erzielten Lernerfolge und der Spaß am Entdecken, Diskutieren und Über-Sich-Selbst-Hinauswachsen haben sich herumgesprochen.'Ich zeig’ dir was! Schüler vermitteln Videokunst' wird im März 2009 mit dem Kunstkurs der Düsseldorfer Joseph-Beuys-Gesamtschule fortgesetzt.
Examining video art and bringing perceptual schemes and patterns of thought to the conscious mind and then to question them critically is for many young people a step into new and uninhabited territory. “To learn to see everything not just in black and white, to watch more closely and precisely and to look out for details, really brought my eyes and ears up to speed,” is how one participant concluded her comments on the first school project imai carried out (October-December 2008). For the 17 to 18-year-olds girls and boys of the Heinrich-Heine Comprehensive School in Düsseldorf the confrontation and discussion with the imai collection was at once surprising, provocative and challenging. The targeted study success and the fun had in discovering, discussing and “growing and rising above of oneself” is by now well known. 'I’ll show you something! School pupils mediate video art' is to be carried on in March 2009 with the Joseph-Beuys-Comprehensive-School art course in Dusseldorf.

Seit Dezember präsentiert das imai internationale Videokunst-Programme auf der Kinoleinwand. Im Mai wird zum zweiten Mal der rote Teppich ausgerollt und zu einem Video-Abend im etwas anderen Ambiente eingeladen. i m a i o n s c r e e n # 2 wird sich im Filmstudio Bambi dem audiovisuellen Spektrum des Themas Tanz widmen. Nach der Compilation 'Freeways and Lonely Hunters' im Dezember verspricht auch das zweite Screening dieser Reihe seinen Gästen einen bewegenden, expressiven und elektrisierenden Abend.

Since December the imai international video art programme has been presented on the cinema screen. In May the red carpet will be rolled out for a second time and invite to a video evening in a somewhat different ambience. i m a i o n s c r e e n # 2 at Filmstudio Bambi is to be dedicated to the audio visual spectrum of the subject of dance. Following the compilation 'Freeways and Lonely Hunters' in December the second screening of this series also promises its guests a moving, expressive and electrifying evening.

Alternating compilations as research recommendation for the online catalogue
Mit seiner neuen Reihe der video art kitchen – einer auf ausgesuchte Arbeiten der Sammlung konzentrierten Online-Compilation – möchte die Stiftung imai das Durchstöbern, Entdecken und Kennenlernen des Online-Katalogs in Zukunft noch einfacher machen. Als thematische Orientierungshilfe und audiovisuelle Appetizer werfen diese in regelmäßigen Abständen vorgestellten Programme einen Blick auf besondere Teilbereiche, Movements und Positionen des mehr als 1.300 Arbeiten umfassenden Online-Katalogs. Noch bis Ende Februar steht als Startschuss das rhythmische Experimentierfeld der Scratch-Videos im Fokus.
Clubkultur, Crossover, VJing, Sampling – die Scratch-Videos der 1980er und 1990er Jahre entziehen sich einer exakten kunstgeschichtlichen oder medienwissenschaftlichen Zuschreibung. Sie lassen sich vielmehr an den räumlichen, medialen und kommunikativen Schnittstellen von Kunst, Musik und Medientechnik verorten. Exemplarische Arbeiten stammen etwa von George Barber, Gorilla Tapes, Dara Birnbaum, Maria Vedder, Rafael Montañez Ortiz, Peter Callas oder Norbert Meissner.
Bereits vor seiner Online-Premiere wurde das Programm Scratch!Video von Elena Friedrich im Rahmen des Workshops 'Im Kontinuum der Bilder: VJing als Medienkunst im öffentlichen Raum' (07.02.09 am Institut für Kultur und Medien der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf) vorgestellt.
With its new series video art kitchen – an online-compilation made up of selected works of the collection – the imai foundation wants the browsing, discovering and acquaintanceship with the online catalogue to become even easier in the future. As a thematic aid to orientation and an audio visual appetiser to the presented programme they cast a glance on movements and positions of the more than 1,300 works of the comprehensive online catalogue. Until the end of February the starting point in focus is the rhythmic experimental field of scratch videos.
Club culture, crossover, VJing, sampling – the scratch-videos of the 1980s and 1990s defy a precise art historical or media science attribution. But rather they locate the spatial, media and communicative interface between art, music and media technology. Exemplary works originating for instance from George Barber, Gorilla Tapes, Dara Birnbaum, Maria Vedder, Rafael Montañez Ortiz, Peter Callas and Norbert Meissner.
Already before its online premier the programme Scratch!Video by Elena Friedrich has been presented in the context of the workshop 'In the continuum of images: Vjing as media art in the public space' (07.02.09 at the Institute for Culture and Media, Heinrich Heine University Dusseldorf).

Robert Cahen zählt zu den bedeutendsten Medienkünstlern Frankreichs. Seit den frühen 1970er Jahren vereint er in seinen Videoarbeiten verschiedenste Disziplinen wie Fotografie, Dokumentarfilm oder musikalische Komposition. Mit seiner oftmals emotionalen, poetisch- meditativen Bildersprache erforscht Cahen abstakte Randbereiche menschlicher Erfahrungen wie Träume und Erinnerungen, den Fluss der Zeit oder Reisen und Vergänglichkeit. Seiner als'Passage'bekannt gewordenen Serie von Videoinstallationen ist noch bis zum 14. März 2009 eine gleichnamige Einzelausstellung in Preston gewidmet.
Robert Cahen numbers amongst the most significant media artists of France. From the early 1970s he has linked a variety of disciplines in his video works such as photography, documentary film and musical compositions. In a vocabulary of images, often emotional, poetic and meditative Cahen researches the abstract margins of human experience such as dreams and memories, the flow of time, travel and transitoriness. A series of video installations entitled 'Passage' is dedicated to his similarly named solo exhibition which can be viewed until 14th March 2009 in Preston.

Für ihr kooperatives Kunstprojekt 'Flag Metamorphoses' hat die Düsseldorfer Künstlerin Myriam Thyes bereits 19 internationale Künstler dazu animiert, Nationalflaggen durch Flash Animationen zu verfremden und zu transformieren. „In diesem Projekt geht es darum, Bedeutungen visueller Zeichen zu befragen, umzuwerten, Festgefügtes aufzubrechen, neue Zusammenhänge zu eröffnen. Ich gehe davon aus, dass man überkommene Repräsentationen (wie auch Vorurteile) nicht erfolgreich unterlaufen kann, ohne sie zu benutzen, weiter zu entwickeln und ihnen neue Repräsentationen entgegen zu setzen - flexible und veränderbare Symbole“, so Thyes in ihrem Partizipations-Aufruf unter www.flag-metamorphoses.net. Die Arbeit wird ab dem 12. März im Rahmen der in Los Angeles präsentierten Gruppenausstellung „Building Paradise“ zu sehen sein – ein Projekt, das sich unter größtmöglicher medialer Bandbreite den Konzepten und Begriffen des Paradiesischen und Utopischen zu nähern versucht.
Through her cooperative art project 'Flag Metamorphoses' Dusseldorf artist Myriam Thyes has already animated 19 international artists to alienate and transform national flags. “In this project it’s about questioning the meanings of visual signs, to reassess them, break up fixed links and open new associations. I assume therein that one cannot successfully avoid the inherited representations (just like prejudices), without using them, developing them further and setting them against new representations - flexible and changeable symbols”, as Thyes says in her appeal to participation at www.flag-metamorphoses.net. The work can be seen from 12th March in the context of the group exhibition 'Building Paradise' presented in Los Angeles – a project that attempts to close in on the concepts and terms of paradise and utopia with the greatest possible bandwidth of media.

Im Rahmen einer internationalen Kooperationsreihe bereist das Medienkunstprojekt Globalscreen seit diesem Monat insgesamt 15 Museen, Galerien, Festivals und Institutionen im In- und Ausland. Die teilnehmenden Künstler – unter ihnen eine Vielzahl aus dem imai-Vertriebsprogramm – reflektieren mit kurzen Filmbeiträgen und Online-Arbeiten Prozesse und Fragen der Wahrnehmung und des Zeitgeistes. Das Spektrum der oftmals humorvollen Umsetzung reicht von Dokumentation bis Animation. Die aktuelle Ausgabe von Globalscreen ist dem Thema 'Simulationen'gewidmet.
In the context of an international cooperation series the media art project Globalscreen has set off this month to travelto a total of 15 museums, galleries, festivals and institutions at home and abroad. The participating artists – amongst whom are numerous participants of the imai operating programme – through their short film contributions and online works reflect on processes and questions of perception and the spirit of the time. The spectrum which frequently features humorous works ranges from documentation to animation. The current Globalscreen output is dedicated to the subject 'Simulations'.
